Frequently Asked Questions
FINDING AN INTERNSHIP
Are students responsible for finding their own internship?
Yes. We suggest students talk to their extended family about connections that may lead to an internship. Students can count on support from HTHI staff with brainstorming places to contact and what to say when making phone calls, but we will not find an internship for you.
Do internships take place off campus?Â
Yes. This helps students get an authentic and realistic glimpse into what happens in the world outside of school.
Can internships be remote/hybrid?
Generally, no. While remote work is becoming more common, it is only available to workers in certain sectors. A primary outcome of internship is for students to gain experience working in a professional setting. Thus, we require internships to be in-person a minimum of four days per week.
Can internships take place outside of San Diego?
Yes. There is an additional permission form that must be signed by the parent/guardian and Jade (HTHI Director). Please note that students/families are responsible for transportation and housing accommodations. If you do go out of town for your internship, communication with your internship supervisor (teacher) will be especially critical. Site visits will be done virtually (Zoom or FaceTime).
What if my internship will have me working at multiple different locations?
This is fine! The mentor just needs to provide supervision, and the student must have transportation. Please communicate with your supervisor about your schedule so they know where you will be working each day.
(An example of this is a student interning with a contractor, who might rotate between several job sites throughout the five weeks.)
Can I have more than one internship?
We prefer students to have a single internship placement and mentor. However, there are cases where it might be appropriate to split time between two internships (e.g., a mentor is not able to provide 30 hours of work per week). Please discuss your proposed arrangement with your teachers and Jade.
INTERNSHIP ASSIGNMENTS
When are the weekly posts due?
Wednesday for initial assignment. Sunday for discussion board replies and timesheet.
What happens if I don't submit an internship assignment?
If you fail to submit an internship assignment, you will be required to come to campus that same week to complete the work and check in with your internship supervisor about missing assignments.
If this happens again, you will be removed from your placement and must report to campus every day for the remainder of internship. Since completing an internship is a graduation requirement, you will need to redo it at a later time.
Do we have to create a project/product?
Yes. You should be working with your mentor on a project that showcases what you are going to be doing/helping with over the course of the five weeks. Your final product should include a "deliverable" (even if it is digital).
You will complete a "project planner" as an assignment in week 2, and work on your project over the remaining three weeks.
